Situated in Chamarel, the Ebony Forest offers an exploration of the endemic fauna and flora of the island. The park covers 16 hectares and features 141 000 endemic plants. The preserved nature has also attracted native birds such as the Mauritius Paradise Flycatcher. The nature reserve plays an active role in the forest restoration and education programmes. The site offers amazing views over the mountains and the west coasts.

The opening of the Ebony forest is the result of 10 years of work of restoring the forest and the planting of 130 000 endemic species.

Highlights

The nature reserve features the few remaining original mature ebony trees. The site also has a museum where you can learn about the history of the plants and animals which were once present there.
